Specialty Fit Contacts/Scleral lenses

Patients with certain eye conditions have been disappointed in the past about not being able to wear contact lenses.  Advancements in contact technology have made it possible for most patients to wear contacts with the specialty fit contacts and scleral lenses available now.

Regular contacts cannot provide adequate vision correction for patients with conditions such as presbyopia, myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia.  Depending on the needs of the patient’s condition, contact lenses could be soft lenses to allow more oxygen to pass to the cornea or rigid lenses for more durability and crisper vision.  Rigid lenses are smaller than soft lenses, only covering 70% to 80% of the cornea.  Hybrid lenses combine soft and rigid lenses.

Scleral lenses are made with the same gas-permeable material as rigid lenses but are larger in diameter.  Scleral lenses cover not only the cornea but also the “white” area of the eye (the sclera) which functionally replace an irregular cornea.  This type of lens helps correct poor vision due to an irregular cornea (such as keratoconus).

Scleral lenses may also be an option for patients suffering from dry eyes and cannot otherwise tolerate contacts as the area between the cornea and the back surface provides a fluid reservoir.
