Pediatric / Vision Therapy
Professional eye care should begin when children are young to ensure healthy eyes and good vision. An eye exam should first be done at about age six months with another one at age 3 and again before they enter first grade (5 or 6 years old). After school begins, regular exams should be done every other year unless glasses have been prescribed or as recommended by your eye doctor.
School performance and optimal learning require good vision. Hand-writing skills and reading efficiency depend directly on hand-eye coordination, and the ability to read the board and see other visual presentations depends on distance visual acuity.
When vision problems are discovered, “vision therapy” may be recommended in an attempt to develop or improve visual skills or abilities. Optometric vision therapy is a course of reinforcement exercises scheduled in the office and at home which can last weeks to months. The exercises may be done with the addition of training glasses, electronic targets, patches, filters, or even balance boards.
When problems with reading or writing are noticed in school, a teacher may recommend a vision assessment. The problem could be refractive errors or a treatable ocular condition. Parkview Optometry strives to provide expert pediatric eye care for the Irvine, California, area.
